About & Mythology

Yamunotri Temple marks the sacred spot where the Yamuna—one of India’s major rivers—is said to emerge from the Himalaya. Mythology connects the river to Yami (Yamuna), sister of Yama, and stories of sages and penances that brought the river to earth. Pilgrims visit to perform ritual baths, offer prayers and seek the unique spiritual energy of the mountain source.

Note: The visible spring and worship site are at the temple; the glacial headwaters lie higher in the range and are part of the larger watershed.
